Mystical Creative Hotspot, or Ordinary Shower?

So, I was in the shower today as I am wont to do from time to time and I began to think about how much better I think when I'm in the shower. Yes, even thinking about thinking is enhanced by the mystical powers of my shower. I began to wonder if I was alone in this and decided to take a look on the web when I got out. (Note to computer industry: make a water proof computer. It's a gold mine! Well, at least I would buy one...)

Anyway, my internet search reminded me that I'm in good company when it comes to thinking better in the shower (or bath as the case may be). The internets pointed me to the story of Archimedes and The Golden Crown. I'm sure most of you heard this story in one science class or another when you were young because it involves him running through the streets naked shouting "Eureka!".

Now, I'm sure many of you may be saying that his epiphany wasn't due to the profound thought enhancing qualities of the bath but instead it was inspired by the actual properties of water. And you may be right, but how does that explain my sharp rise in creativity whenever I get in the shower? How about you folks, any of you have many more of those eureka moments in the shower than you do elsewhere? Have any keen insights into the cause of this phenomenon?

Baths and showers both seem to have an interesting effect on creativity. With showers, the sound of running water -- I believe -- has a hypnotic effect, and those little creative things become easier to work through. I've launched free of a bath to find a notebook or the keyboard a little more often than I have with showers, though. Sitting in water and thinking can be rather productive. :3

I don't do baths. I've never really been a fan. I think it's mainly because I can't stand even tepid water. I need it to be hot. Not to mention, I love the feeling of the water pattering on my body. It does have a rather hypnotizing effect as you said.
  • Lee Nelson  - Nope. It's all about the commute
When I used to commute a couple of hours a day, my best thinking came from the car. I used to put on a tape player and talk out my ideas.

I'd set the player on my passenger seat and then have long conversations about writing ideas, work ideas, Sunday School lesson ideas, etc. In fact, I used to practice my Sunday School lesson talk while on my commute.

For me, the shower is where I daydream the best - that soft feeling takes me away from reality and to the place where Legolas loves me the best.

    Just sayin'.

I guess the shower is where I daydream best as well. Daydreaming just happens to be a very productive thing for me, being a writer and all. I daydream about my characters and the world they inhabit and it helps me figure out what I should do next in my stories.

When driving I can't really focus on anything else. It takes my full attention and tends to stifle my creativity. Glad it works for you though!

    Thanks for stopping by!
